Uber and Lyft encourage carpooling to common drop-off spots through uberPOOL and Lyft Shared. These ride types are designed to carry passengers to the same destination from the same pickup location. Each ride is completed in a sedan, SUV, or minivan with space for up to four passengers. The apps limit each party to two passengers to accommodate up to two parties per ride. Riders may need to walk to a common pickup destination to take advantage of these shared rides.
Both options offer less expensive fares than standard Lyft and UberX rides even if you don’t end up riding with other passengers. The typical ride for both services is about 25% to 30% cheaper than the standard Uber or Lyft ride. uberPOOL and Lyft Shared are not available in all cities with availability indicated in the apps.
